myMag is an iPad app which allows user to publish and read personal magazines. iPad is a great product especially in reading experience. There are some great eMagazine app in app store, such as Popular Science, Wired, NY Times etc. But, the contents of these eMagazines are normally provided by big companies. Individuals are hard to publish their independent magazines to iPad. myMag is intended to fill the gap between individual publishers and readers.

As shown left in figure 1, the publishers could sign in myMag’s website to launch magazines and manage magazines’ issues. Issues will automatically be published to Amazon S3 Cloud Server. The readers(see right of figure 1) use ‘myMag’ on iPad to subscribe magazines. When new issues are published, the reader could download, read, share and review those magazine using myMag.

There are three scenes when user using myMag on iPad. As shown in figure 2, reader open the myMag, serial preset featured magazines shown on the screen. User could add new subscriptions(see figure 2. a). After new subscription added to main screen, reader could tap on the magazine’s icon to see the magazine’s issues(see figure 2. b). User could download these issues and read(see figure 2. c). In reading scene, user could back to magazine’s scene to choose another issue, or user could simply back to subscription scene to see another magazine’s issues.

Interaction Design of myMag

Navigation

Normally, users may in two situations while reading on iPad.

One situation (Situation A),is to put the iPad on the desk or on their legs (see left of figure 3). In this case, user could turn next/previous page using swipe gesture or tapping the left/right edge of the iPad(see figure 4. a). When user want to jump to particular article which is far from current page, they could use menu-like navigation view to do it (see figure 4. b).

Another situation (Situation B) is to hold the iPad with their hands (see right of figure 3). In this case, the interactions are basically same with the firsts scene. The difference is that when user wish to jump to particular article, one of the his hand has to leave the iPad for navigation operation. To avoid this situation, myMag provide a totally new widget : thumbwheel, by which user could rolling his finger for navigation(see figure 5).

Brightness Adjustment

Most of eMagazines are hard to adjust screen brightness. Use myMag, user doesn’t need to back to the settings view for brightness adjustment.

In situation A, user can use two fingers moving up and down to brighten and darken the screen(see left of figure 6). In situation B, user can press screen with one finger and move second finger up and down to brighten and darken the screen (see right of figure 6).

Content Display

iPad has two interface orientations: portrait and landscape. myMag provide four way for content display in these two orientations. Editors could choose ideal one option for their issues.

The first way, as in figure 7. a, the content of issue is portrait. myMag will display one page in iPad portrait mode and join two pages in iPad ladscape mode. The second way, as in figure 7. b, the content of issue is landscape. myMag will display one page in iPad landscape mode and splice one half page in iPad portrait mode. The third way, as in figure 7. c, and also the most fashion one, content of issue is square, the center of content, in other word, safe area, will be displayed whatever iPad orientation is. The last way(as figure 7.d), the content of issue is really large and non-linear, this mode is especially good for mind map displaying.

Multi-media Support

myMag enable the audio and video playback in issues. The media could pack in issue or stream over internet.
